Newbie #2017MakeNine

I'm a dressmaking novice.

I dabbled in dressmaking in 2016 and made 3 garments (one wearable) but 2017 is going to be the year I sew!

I'm a bit late to the party but I've got big plans for this year so I wanted to join in the #2017makenine challenge...

1) Sew house 7 Tea House Dress/ Vintage Butternick Sew and Go Pocket Dress

I've grouped these two patterns because they are very similar...

Sew and Go Pocket Dress- I've made, well attempted, this one before, in a slippery slippery polyester, it was a #fail and one of my unwearable items of 2016. It's actually a lovely pattern and I would like a wearable one for summer.

Sew House Seven Tea House Dress- both my bank account and I were victims of Pinterest fever here. Pinterest dangled the carrot of gorgeousness before my eyes and then swiftly denied me access. I searched high and low for the pattern, only to find there were none in the UK. Obsessive and impatient as ever I contacted Peggy, the designer, and imported a small number to sell. And so was born the Impatient Dressmaker Etsy store and this blog.

I've already bought these two fabrics, light blue cross-hatched light suiting material and the chambray with cherry print from The Cheap Shop

2) McCall's Shirt Dress (6696)

One of my favourite garments is my Hobbs shirt dress, it's been a wardrobe staple for years and has done weddings, birthday parties and Ascot a couple of times.

This pattern looks really good because it comes with pencil or circle shirt options, long sleeves, capped sleeves and sleeveless and a slip pattern. If I can make this to a good standard I'll be sorted for life!

I've started making a pencil skirt sleeveless version in the Swallow Print, and so far so good. I think I'd like to do the circle skirt one in the Honey Bee fabric but I'll see how the first one turns out.

3) Sew La Di Da Margo Playsuit

This was my one wearable garment of last year, made with vast amounts of help from my Mum and Sister, and I love it. I made it in a lightweight chambray denim and it fits really well, is super comfortable and so far hasn't fallen apart.

I'd like to make another and this time tailor it a bit more at the waist, maybe take a little of the width of the leg and shorten it, maybe even to culottes length so I can wear it with flats. If we have a good summer I might go the whole hog and so the short version.

4) Sew La Di Da Dorothy Dress

This pattern looks amazing, I haven't received my copy yet, but this is literally my dress of dreams. Off the shoulder, fitted with a flared skirt. Actual heaven. Now I just need to make it and an even to wear it but that's just details...

So hard to pick a fabric for this dress, so many possibilities, it's such a feminine dress I want to steer clear of florals and probably hard to match patters because I think that might be hard to achieve.

5) Sew House Seven Backless Bridgetown Dress

Love this casual, boho and sexy little dress pattern. Will have to think carefully about the material, to avoid any visible nips, but I can see this getting made in many different fabrics and a lot of wear with gladiator sandals in the (fingers crossed) sunshine.

6) Sew La Di Da Miss Maguire

A top, jacket and skirt pattern in one, I love a co-ord. This appealed because it's gorgeously vintage but a bit more casual than the other Sew La Di Da Dresses. Being a top and skirt it's more versatile and the style is really clean. Also pockets!

7) Sew Over It Ultimate Pencil Skirt

High waisted, figure hugging and work/ play appropriate. I love this skirt and there are only 4 pieces in the pattern.

This was actually the first thing I've ever made, totally on my own and I went out in it Saturday night- such a great feeling.

8) As yet unknown dress of the floral variety

I saw the dress in the picture in the window of Whistles this morning and bumped a culottes and top set to include it. I desperately want to make it but first I need to do some pattern hunting.

9) Sew House Seven Toaster Sweater #1 and #2

This is the next thing on my make list, slightly cropped so I think it will look great with a high waisted pencil skirt. I've bought a cream and black knit fabric to try them out.

So that's my #2017makenine plans. It was hard to choose and I'm not 100% on fabrics yet but it feels good to have a game plan.

I'd love to hear/ see what everyone else has planned, please share below...
